Year One

Welcome to Year 1

In Year 1, we have a broad and engaging curriculum, where the children are encouraged to be resilient and independent throughout all challenges.

In Year 1 the curriculum is designed to be broad and comprehensive covering core skills in literacy and numeracy alongside a range of foundation subjects. The year 1 curriculum is a significant transition from the foundation stage to a more formal subject base National Curriculum.

Class Routines

  • We start the day with handwriting practice which encourages children to focus on a simple task and practice the correct formation for letters and numbers.
  • Following this, we have our Phonics lessons where we focus on simple sounds and blending sounds in words, introducing a new sound each day. The lesson is followed by group reading activity -the children will read books that they are confident with to develop independence.
  • After phonics we have writing, each half term we will have a book focus, and children will begin to write simple sentences using their phonics to decode and spell words. Throughout the year children will build to writing simple stories focusing on capital letter, finger spaces and full stops.
  • After break, we have maths, where children work on basic mathematical skills and previous learning before engaging with new concepts and problem solving.
  • Our afternoons consist of science, history, geography, art, DT, PSHE, RWV, Spanish, music and computing.
  • Monday and Tuesday are our PE days in Y1- All children are required to come to school in full PE kit.

Going the extra mile for success

All home support is hugely appreciated and makes a positive impact on your child's learning opportunities. Please support your child by ensuring they read at least 5 times a week, for about 5-10 minutes at a time. Please bring diaries/books into school daily and use diaries/class dojo to communicate with us throughout the week.

Children are also expected to spend 5 minutes per night on Spelling Shed and TT Rockstars. Assignments will be set regularly for children to complete online.

After February half term Year 1 pupils who need extra support with their reading and sounds will be asked to join a phonics club after school 1 night per week, this is to help pupils get ready for the national Phonics screening test in June for all Year 1 pupils.

This year, we are continuing with the 'Travel Tracker' scheme, where children receive badges for taking part and increasing their fitness. If you must drive your child to school, they can still achieve an active badge by parking at the shops and walking the remaining distance.

Thank you for your support.

Here’s to a wonderful year ahead,

Mrs Chew and Miss Topp
